(Please bear with...As recipes and idea are added for survival staples, they will be added, and eventually we will have templates posted for recipe books, or food tags that you can print and include with your charity donations, so they can be utilized to their highest potential.

Living the broke life...I have learned the wisdom of surviving on bare essentials, and one would be surprised how much unnecessary money they waste on items that can be produced with little expenditure in the way of supplies, and are enriching for our creative intelligence.

Backyard agriculture recipes and ideas are on the way also...

Why not learn how to surive off dandelions (that make teas, coffee, salds, etc...). You never know when you'll need to know how to live off the land...

Your local churches, food pantries and city organization to name a few are ALWAYS accepting donations.

For a very inexpensive trip to the grocery store you can provide a family or a number of families with the staples they'll need, food and other survival staples (toiletries/tee-shirts/etc...).

When providing staples, it is an added bonus for the recipient if you include a RevolutionRoom sticker, or booklet that gives them ideas of how to fix it up and make it palatable.

There will be more and more of those kinds of templates added with time.

Other Survival Staples:

Soap (for laundry/body/hair)

The recipe for the laundry soap is as follows. Feel free to add the anecdote if you like.

  • 1 c. shredded or grated bar soap (I use the food proc. to shred the little soap bars from motels, or buy soap at $1 store.
  • 1/2 c. super washing soda (Arm and Hammer) This can be tricky to find but some grocery stores carry it. A & H toll free locator number is 1-800-524-1328.
  • 1/2 c. borax (Borateem avail in laundry deterg. aisle.)

This doesn't suds up. Use only 1 tablespoon.

I make a double batch of this and it lasts 6 months.

I recently was away from home for a few days. I had just made up a double batch of this homemade powder laundry detergent. When I got home the canister was almost empty. The housesitter did some wash and since the stuff doesn't suds up-she kept adding more. She used like a 6-month supply of laundry soap! I was NOT pleased!

Lotion/Body oil/Powder/Deodorant/Toothpaste:

Cornstarch can be used as a body powder...

Natural homemade recipes for your skin are simple to make and cost-effective. What you put on your skin is just as important as what you eat. Commercial products often contain chemicals that are absorbed by your skin finding their way into the bloodstream which can be harmful to your overall health.

Virgin coconut oil/butter makes for a good moisturizer by providing a protective layer that locks in natural moisture. Coconut oil solidifies at temperatures below 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the coconut butter in small lip balm or eye cream jars or any small sterilized jar. For a lip balm, use coconut butter on its own or add peppermint or spearmint oil. As an acne treatment, add a couple of drops of tea tree, lavender, or patchouli oil. For wrinkles, add rose, orange or patchouli oil. To treat eczema, add chamomile, geranium, or orange oil. To treat broken capillaries, add rose, palmarosa, or parsley oil. To treat cellulite, add grapefruit, tangerine, or orange oil. For stretch marks, add palmarosa or neroli oil. To treat burns, add geranium, patchouli or lavender oil.

For sunburned skin, break open a leaf of an Aloe Vera plant and smooth onto the skin. The gel is also good for other types of burns and has soothing, cooling, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Strawberry juice, cucumbers and avocados are also soothing to sunburned skin.

For tired eyes, place cucumber slices over your eyes. For dark circles around your eyes, place cooled tea bags over your eyes.

For a homemade facial toner, mix green tea, chamomile or ginseng tea (made with mineral water or distilled water) with lavender or lemon oil. Green tea is rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals that damage and age the skin. Green tea is said to diminish fine lines. Lavender oil is a good toner and lemon oil is a good rejuvenator and toner. Add Vitamin C crystals as a preservative and antioxidant. MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) is a natural source of organic sulfur good for the skin. Add MSM crystals to your toner or eat high sulfur foods such as kale or watercress.

Prick a capsule of Vitamin A, E, or wheat germ oil and smooth directly onto your skin, add to coconut, almond or apricot oil, or to your toner. Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant and Vitamin E is said to slow down the aging process. Almond oil soothes and lubricates the skin. Apricot oil protects and softens the skin. Wheat germ oil promotes skin elasticity.

For a moisturizing and refreshing mask, mix avocado with shredded cucumber. Avocados are rich in protein and Vitamin A. Cucumbers are cooling and cleansing. Use a mashed banana for a skin firming mask.

To lighten age spots, rub lemon directly onto your skin.

For a body powder, mix cornstarch and baking soda with your favorite essential oil. For a foot powder, mix cornstarch, baking soda and tea tree or peppermint oil. Baking soda acts as a deodorizer and soothes the skin. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, germicide, antibacterial, and fungicide. Peppermint oil is soothing to the feet and swollen ankles.

Drinking plenty of water, eating raw fruits and vegetables, and getting plenty of rest are one of the best ways to achieving healthy and radiant skin. What goes into your body is reflective on your skin.

Polymer clay can be expensive, but it's so easy to make, and you can color it with food coloring. The best food coloring is the paste colors that cake decorators use. They last forever.

The recipe is:

ONE PART CORNSTARCH TO ONE PART WHITE GLUE (LIKE ELMERS GLUE).

That's it. If you want it thinner, just add water. How Cheap Is That.

By Ardis Barnes

Editor's Note: There were many questions about this recipe. Fortunately, Ardis submitted another tip that may help people understand the process. Here it is:

MAKE YOUR OWN POLYMER CLAY CHEAP

Mix equal amounts of elmers glue and cornstarch. Form it into your favorite form and let it dry at least overnight. If you want to make beads, leave a toothpick in it while it dries.

I'm a Raggedy Ann buff so I make round flat forms to make Raggedy Ann pins and magnets. I do the faces with fine tip permanent markers. I just need red and black for that. The forms can be sprayed with sealer that comes in a spray can meant for clay type crafts. It can be colored with food coloring too. The best food coloring is the paste type that's used for cake decorating, and it lasts forever. How easy is this, Ha!

Homemade Stickers

1 packet (1/4 ounce) unflavored gelatin
1 tablespoon REAL Lemon
3 tablespoons boiling water
1 teaspoon sugar

1.  Sprinkle the gelatin in a small bowl filled with the REAL Lemon and allow the gelatin to soften for 5 minutes.
2.  Carefully pour the boiling water into the softened gelatin; stir until dissolved.
3.  Add the sugar and mix well.
3.  Using a paint brush, thinly brush the adhesive on the back of the paper where you have created your "stickers".
It works best to make a whole sheet of stickers and then brush the adhesive on the full sheet.  The page may curl up
as it dries, but simply press it under something heavy such as the phone book.
4.  Allow the adhesive to completely dry before attempting to cut the stickers apart.
5.  Store any leftover sticker glue in the refrigerator (preferably in a glass jar for ease of reheating).  To reuse, place
the jar of jelled adhesive in a pan of hot water to soften.

NOTE:
After making your stickers, use your sewing machine without any thread and "sew" along the cutting lines.  Now the
stickers can be easily torn apart.

Crayon T-Shirts

Since kids are so good at breaking up crayons when they are new from the box, getting them to break them up intentionally is usually fun! Let the kids tear apart the crayons until they are in tiny pieces.

Parental supervision is recommended.

This project is rated AVERAGE to do.

What You Need

  • Broken crayons
  • Wax paper
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Dish towel
  • White paper
  • White fabric or a T-shirt

How To Make It

  1. Take a plain white piece of fabric (we used a T-shirt) and prepare it by placing it on the ironing board "canvas" side up. Insert a piece of clean white paper between the layers of the T-shirt.
  2. Kids can create a pattern on the T-shirt with the broken crayon pieces. Simple patterns might include a heart, a peace sign, or a rainbow.
  3. The adult can place waxed paper on top of the crayon pattern, and a dish towel on top of that. Use the iron on a low to medium heat to melt the crayons into place. Then remove the towel and the waxed paper to see the new creation!
  4. Since the crayons are colored, the idea is to melt the color into the fabric. The wax will usually wash off, but the colors remain for a LONG time!
